Award of Appreciation

Established in 1989, the Award of Appreciation is  presented by the Board of Governors to that individual(s) who is not a member of the Bar in recognition of outstanding service toward the creation of a better public understanding of the legal profession and the administration of justice, the judiciary or the legislative process.

2020 Recipient

Rick DeBruhl: After a 31-year career at KPNX-TV, Rick DeBruhl joined the State Bar of Arizona as its Chief Communications Officer in 2009. Rick was fortunate to lead a highly professional and effective team that managed the Bar’s public relations, marketing, website content, magazine, government relations and the public service center. Rick oversaw the modernizing and redesign of the Bar’s website, which won an award from the National Association of Bar Executives in 2011. Rick’s greatest challenge, however, came from a series of bills at the legislature which were designed to break apart the existing structure of the Bar. For five years, Rick successfully led the effort to defeat the legislation. Always a voice for the consumer, Rick also led the Bar’s efforts to create a public service center and the current Find-a-Lawyer program. Rick left the bar in 2019 to become a communication consultant. Since then he’s worked with both attorneys and law firms in areas ranging from media training to effective messaging. Rick also operates a company called Legal Case Video which does settlement documentaries for attorneys. He also continues his broadcasting career as the voice of the Barrett Jackson auctions on the A&E Networks.
