With the mission of strengthening families and systems of care to improve the lives of children who have disabilities, Raising Special Kids serves parents and families of children with the full range of disabilities, from birth to age 26, and provides support, training, information, and individual assistance so families can become effective advocates for their children. Programs and services are offered at no charge and are delivered by staff who are parents themselves of children who have disabilities. We believe that families who understand their rights and responsibilities in education and healthcare systems are better able to partner with professionals to achieve positive outcomes for their children. Raising Special Kids touches the lives of over 10,000 parents and family members each year assisting with issues such as: legal options for families when a child reaches the age of majority; informal and formal dispute resolution options available to families under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); understanding and navigating Arizona’s Medicaid programs for individuals with intellectual, developmental, physical, and behavioral health disabilities and disorders. Raising Special Kids is an organization founded in 1979 on the principle of families helping families. |
